If you really cultivate, it is impossible not to become a Buddha even you don't want to; however, if you don't cultivate, it is impossible to become a Buddha even you want to.
The basic rule in Chan meditation is: Let your eyes contemplate your nose; let your nose contemplate your mouth; let your mouth contemplate your mind.
Laotze said in theTao Te Ching that "the kind of beauty that is considered beautiful
by everyone is unsightly; the kind of kindness that is considered kind
by everyone is unkind." first?
Preparations on the Eve of Death
Cultivate seriously and uphold the precepts carefully at all times and in all places, setting an example with your own conduct.
Today
we meet with many of long life, the worlds most honorable people.
This is not to say that they honor themselves, but that they receive the
respect of others.
According to the cosmology of the Flower Adornment (Avatamsaka) Sutra, there are limitless seas of worlds, each with its own particular properties and various distinctions.
People are strange creatures in that they only have the flesh eye the
physical eye and so they can't discern the relationship between previous causes and later effects in their lives.
If we do many good things while we are turning on the wheel of rebirth, and generate enough wholesome merit and virtue, then we can be reborn in the heavens where we will enjoy the many delightful blessings of the divine realm.
Each of you should think for a moment: in the past, the Buddha had to cultivate limitless and boundless merit and virtue before he could become a Buddha.
During the Dharma-Semblance period of Vipasyin Buddha, in the country Varanasi
there lived a rebellious official, Rahu, who plotted to overthrow the
king. Rahu led troops in mutiny and murdered King Raja.
In Buddhism, the term "Three Poisons" refers to greed, hatred, and stupidity. In Taoism, the term is "Three Corpse Spirits," but refers to the same thing.
Reciting Amitabha during walking. Reciting Amitabha during walking. Reciting Amitabha
during walking. Reciting Amitabha during walking. That means, you have
to recite Amitabha during walking, standing, sitting and laying. Recite
it until you find it is impossible to stop reciting.
"When
Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara was practicing the profound Prajna Paramita,
he illuminated the five skandhas and saw that they are all empty, and
he crossed beyond all suffering and difficulty."
All of you have just taken refuge with the infinite Triple Jewel--the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha--that pervades the space throughout the Dharma Realm.
In this era, when technology and materialism flourish, we want to take a careful look at the thinking of the times and ask ourselves whether or not this is a good age to live in. Science has made
In the name Bodhidharma, "Bodhi" means enlightened and "Dharma" means the teachings. In the sequence of great masters who enlightened to the Dharma, ...
You don't see that
the thousand hands and thousand eyes of Kuan Shr Yin Bodhisattva are always
emitting an unhindered light that shines throughout the universe on all
beings who have affinities.
Families have rules
that families follow; nations have laws that nations are run by; and monasteries
have regulations that those in the monasteries accord with.
Now I am explaining the Shurangama Mantra for you and it is extremely difficult to encounter such a rare Dharma assembly as this. Billions of eons pass and no one explains the Shurangama Mantra even once.
1. I vow that as
long as there is a single Bodhisattva in the three periods of time throughout
the ten directions of the Dharma Realm, to the very end of empty space,
who has not accomplished Buddhahood, I too will not attain the right enlightenment.
I see that people
are not very clear about the Dharma door of reciting the Buddha's name,
and so they do the reciting very sloppily and don't perfect their skill.
Demons helped the Buddha attain the Way.
If there were no demons, there would be no Buddha, either. Demons come to test you,
to make you take another step forward.
People are strange
creatures in that they only have the flesh eye-the physical eye-and so
they can't discern the relationship between previous causes and later
effects in their lives.
Religious leaders,
good and wise advisors, and greatly virtuous ones from all nations, I
ask for your compassion today as we gather together to investigate the
relationship between Buddhism and world peace.
Good and Wise Advisors! People who study the Buddhadharma should not have thoughts of greed or
contention. Some people are such that the more they study, the more they
want to contend; the more they study, the greedier they become.
As to we people who are born in this world: some of us have come to repay our debts. Some have come to make debts. Some have come to cultivate the Way. Some have come to create karma.
In his quest for perfect wisdom, the Buddha dedicated his life to vigorous cultivation. How can we expect to achieve Buddhahood without any effort at all?
If all people would free the creatures instead of eating them and all would practice vegetarianism,
then all the worldly disasters would disappear and a crisis would be averted.
Stand outside a slaughterhouse at midnight. Listen to the pigs, sheep, and cows bleating and wailing, begging for their lives. Then, you'll know where war comes from.
From morning till night, we should bow to the
Buddhas and recite the Buddhas’ names to eradicate our obstructions from offenses,
and we should be busy for the sake of the Dharma.
On
Tuesday, May 19, 1992 over a hundred students led by Dr. Tais DeRosa from
Lowell High School in San Francisco came to Gold Mountain Monastery in
Chinatown to hear the Venerable Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua's talk on Buddhism
and education.
The father of Tripitaka
Master Kumarajiva (344-413 A.D.), was Kumarayana, Kumarayana was the son
of a high official in India and, although he was heir to his father's
position, he renounced the world instead and travelled everywhere in search
of a Good knowing Advisor.
The hells’ anxiety and suffering, Is devoid of doors, yet one bores right in. Giving rise to delusion, deeds are done. The retribution is borne in due accord.
The ghostly crew delights in hate, Deluded by effects, confused about cause; Their ignorance and upside-downness Grow greater each day, deeper each month.
The way of men is harmony, With merit and error interspersed. On virtuous
deeds you rise; offenses make you fall. It has nothing to do with anyone
else at all.
Beings of the Six Desire and the Brahma heavens, Practice the five precepts and the ten good deeds. Planting seeds with outflows, They cannot terminate their transmigration.
The holy sages enlightened to conditions, Doze high on mountain peaks
alone. Springtime’s flowers wither in the fall In a cycle of twelve interconnecting
links.
If anyone wishes to understand, All people of the three periods of time,
He should contemplate the nature of the Dharma Realm; The Tathagatas are
made from the mind alone.
In this era, when technology and materialism flourish, we want to take a careful look at the thinking of the times and ask ourselves whether or not this is a good age to live in.
Buddhism goes through periods of flourishing and decline. It flourishes when living beings have abundant blessings and declines and disappears as their blessings become scarce.
Living beings are born without a beginning, and die without an end. Without beginning and without end, they transmigrate, revolving in birth and death.
The basic rule in Chan meditation is: "Let your eyes contemplate your nose; let your nose contemplate your mouth; let your mouth contemplate your mind."
If we do not do a
good job as human beings, we cannot become Buddhas. Therefore, we must lay
the foundation. What is the foundation for being a human being?
Now
our Chan session is about to begin. In the Chan Hall, we don't recite
the Buddha's name; and during the Buddha Recitation Session, we don't
practice meditation.
Every
dharma is found within the Shurangama Sutra, so there are no potentials
it fails to attract.
It is the essential Dharma for all generations: It is the right seal
for becoming a Buddha or a Patriarch.
The
Flower Adornment Sutra
is the Sutra of the Dharma Realm and the Sutra of Empty Space. To the
exhaustion of the Dharma Realm and empty space there is no place where
the Flower Adornment Sutra is not present.
The
Shurangama Sutrais a Sutra that acts like a demon-spotting mirror in Buddhism. All the
celestial demons, externalists, and the li,
mei,and wang liang ghosts reveal their true appearance when they see the
Shurangama Sutra. They have no way to hide and no place to flee to.
