The frequency of natural and manmade disasters has been on the rise in recent years.

One passage of the Shurangama Sutra discusses two kinds of perverse and false views. What are the two kinds of perverse and false views?

Today, I have some thoughts that I would like to share with you -- words from the bottom of my heart.

For the first time in U.S. history, a state governor's inauguration invited Buddhist monks for introductory remarks.

The aim of sitting in meditation is to open our wisdom. Enlightenment is the opening of our wisdom.

The basic rule in Chan meditation is: “Let your eyes contemplate your nose; let your nose contemplate your mouth; let your mouth contemplate your mind.”

Virtuous ancients said, "Those with superior virtues do not consider their virtues virtues; those with inferior virtues are attached to virtues.

Everyone has an atom bomb (afflictions) waiting for the right opportunity to explode.

Let me talk about why there was a war in Vietnam.

If we want our family to be at peace, then we must not quarrel; otherwise the wife may become a nun or the husband may become a monk.

Whoever wants to become a Buddha first has to be a good person.

There are four stages to everything: formation, dwelling, deterioration, and emptiness.

During the era of Spring and Autumn in China, a sage was born and he was Confucius.

Buddhists ought not be curious or overly ambitious.

Eating is a very important matter in everyone's life, as are wearing clothes and sleeping.

Let's inquire into this major issue: cause and effect.

"People die for money; birds die over food." Who's right and who's wrong?

Life is not about money; life is a priceless gem; it cannot be bought or sold with cash.

People who study the Buddhadharma are starting to plant their seeds in the soil.

Kids! Do you know what the fundamentals to being people are?

In studying Buddhism we must renew ourselves every day, day after day.

We are most unlucky, being born in this Saha World.

The three types of disasters vary only in degree.

People in ancient times had relatively few thoughts and desires; hence they had fewer calamities.

All wise teachers, the most serious retribution in the world comes from killing.

Today let's talk a little about money.

There isn't a peaceful place in this world.

The world is going through changes every day: people are changing, things are changing, the times are changing

Some people born into this world come to repay their debts.

People basically feel that they do worthwhile things

Today we meet with many of long life, the world’s most honorable people. This is not to say that they honor themselves, but that they receive the respect of others.

When laypeople go to the temple, they think that the more incense they burn, the more merit they will have.

The Shurangama Sutra is a demon-spotting mirror which, when shone on the demons, can expose them.

If you understand, you can put it down.
If you don’t understand, you will be attached

"Seeing through it" means understanding, and "letting go of it" means being liberated. Only when you are liberated will you truly master yourself.

In cultivating the Way, sometimes you may find that you are unable to find the Path, that you don't know how to go about cultivating.

According to the cosmology of the Flower Adornment (Avatamsaka) Sutra, there are limitless seas of worlds, each with its own particular properties and various distinctions.

A Collection of the Venerable Master's Rules:

If we do many good things while we are turning on the wheel of rebirth, and generate enough wholesome merit and virtue, then we can be reborn in the heavens where we will enjoy the many delightful blessings of the divine realm.

At the very start, before heaven and earth came into being, there weren't any people.

Each of you should think for a moment: in the past, the Buddha had to cultivate limitless and boundless merit and virtue before he could become a Buddha.

All the disasters in the world happen because people don't hold the Five Precepts and practice the Ten Good Acts.

When you have wisdom, you are able to readily solve any kind of problem; when you don't have wisdom, there are obstacles everywhere.

During the Dharma-Semblance period of Vipasyin Buddha, in the country Varanasi there lived a rebellious official, Rahu, who plotted to overthrow the king. Rahu led troops in mutiny and murdered King Raja.

Every breath we take, every move we make, every word, every action, every thought, every reflection affects the time and space in the universe.

"Who is mindful of the Buddha?" Each time you investigate that, it's like a Precious Vajra Sword cutting through a bit of emotional desire and lust.

You don't want to get fixated on the eloquence that comes with delight in speaking Dharma and end up being lead around and turned by living beings.

In society, many people do a lot of talking-so much talking that people do not really pay attention to what's being said.

If a person sits quietly in Dhyana samadhi for an instant...

It is because they are the Sangha of the pure field of blessing.

He told me that he wanted to come to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to serve Buddhism.

Every breath we take, every move we make, every word, every action, every thought, every reflection affects the time and space in the universe.

Don't wait until old age to cultivate the Way. Inside the lonely graves, there buried people of young age.

Today is the second day of the Buddha Recitation Session.

Today is the first full day of the Buddha Recitation Session. Those who have chanted the Buddha's name before know of its advantages.

Limitless kalpas ago, Shakyamuni Buddha was in the mountains cultivating the practice of patience.

Why was it that Shakyamuni Buddha left home to cultivate the Way?

So far, I have explained three techniques of Buddha Recitation: "contemplation by thought," "contemplation of an image," and "holding the name."

The Avatamsaka Sutra is also known as the Sutra of the Dharma Realm, the Sutra of Empty Space.

Everyone can practice the Buddha-recitation Dharma-door.

Astronauts are being trained to be able to rocket into outer space; While we are training to reach "outer" enlightenment.

In Buddhism, the term "Three Poisons" refers to greed, hatred, and stupidity. In Taoism, the term is "Three Corpse Spirits," but refers to the same thing.

Reciting Amitabha during walking. Reciting Amitabha during walking. Reciting Amitabha during walking. Reciting Amitabha during walking. That means, you have to recite Amitabha during walking, standing, sitting and laying. Recite it until you find it is impossible to stop reciting.

The place where we live is forever disturbed by countless terrors, miseries, and troubles.

Who told you to act so recklessly and brashly when you were free of sickness, instead of cherishing and taking care of yourself?

The Dharma-ending Age is the time when the demons are strong and the Dharma is weak

"When Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara was practicing the profound Prajna Paramita, he illuminated the five skandhas and saw that they are all empty, and he crossed beyond all suffering and difficulty."

You can go off to rebirth at any time you choose;you are free to come and go as you please.

To end birth and death in the world is not easy.

If you can sit in meditation until your state is such that "inside you have no body and mind," outside you have no world, and ...

In the very beginning, the universe was nebulous and indistinguishable.

All of you have just taken refuge with the infinite Triple Jewel--the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha--that pervades the space throughout the Dharma Realm.

In studying Buddhism, the most important thing is to avoid creating offenses in Buddhism.

In his quest for perfect wisdom, the Buddha dedicated his life to vigorous cultivation.

In this era, when technology and materialism flourish, we want to take a careful look at the thinking of the times and ask ourselves whether or not this is a good age to live in. Science has made

Today, I'm going to tell you about some faults I used to have in the past.

So, people of like types get together in this world. Students get together with students and form close relation ships.

Today, I'm going to tell you about some faults I used to have in the past.

The entire world is filled with natural disasters and calamities; it is covered in blackness and there is no light.

I want to tell you what to do after I'm gone. All of you should prepare yourselves psychologically. I may depart at any time. Nothing is fixed.

You don't see that the thousand hands and thousand eyes of Kuan Shr Yin Bodhisattva are always emitting an unhindered light that shines throughout the universe on all beings who have affinities.

This four characters: A Mi Tou Fwo (Amitabha Buddha) means inconceivable, so it says,

The Manifestation Chapter of the Flower Adornment Sutra say "There is not a single living being who is not replete with wisdom of the Thus Come One."

You could say that Earth Store Bodhisattva is the most dumb of Bodhisattvas and also the most intelligent.

It isn't easy to become a person. Holding on to a human body is even more difficult.

Everything in the human realm is created from a single thought

The Buddhadharma can be divided into different stages in time: the Proper Dharma Age, the Dharma Image Age, and he Dharma Ending Age.

Families have rules that families follow; nations have laws that nations are run by; and monasteries have regulations that those in the monasteries accord with.

Now I will speak some crazy words, which are not in accord with any rules or regulations.

All elderly Good and Wise Advisors, all Good and Wise Advisors in the prime of life, and all young and promising Good and Wise Advisors:

Every person among us has created manifold karma-some of it is good karma, some of it is bad.

The Tao is near but people seek afar. Things are easy, but people seek what's difficult.

Now I am explaining the Shurangama Mantra for you and it is extremely difficult to encounter such a rare Dharma assembly as this. Billions of eons pass and no one explains the Shurangama Mantra even once.

As we recite "Namo Amitabha Buddha" we each create and adorn our own Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Constantly base yourself on the spirit of public justice, open-mindedness, and great courage

A great hero must have the spirit of firm, unshakable perseverance to conquer every kind of suffering.

All Good and Wise Advisors, Happy New Year! Like Professor Tsu, I would like to wish all of you a Happy Chinese New Year in advance!

1. I vow that as long as there is a single Bodhisattva in the three periods of time throughout the ten directions of the Dharma Realm, to the very end of empty space, who has not accomplished Buddhahood, I too will not attain the right enlightenment.

At a place where there are true cultivators, demons often come to test them.

I see that people are not very clear about the Dharma door of reciting the Buddha's name, and so they do the reciting very sloppily and don't perfect their skill.

It's said, The good assemble together, The bad form gangs, People seek out their own kind.

If you want to be true Buddhists, then you definetely cannot contend, be greedy, seek anything, be selfish, pursue benefit, or tell lies

Sitting in the lotus posture can eradicate karmic obstacles gathered over limitless eons, end birth and death, and generate limitless merit and virtue.

All the people here in the Saha World enjoy happiness and dislike suffering.

The Dharma-door of Chan meditation points directly to the human mind. It teaches us to see our nature and to become a Buddha.

Without wasting a single moment, I worked relentlessly at my investigation, constantly applying my efforts to it.

When you recite "Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva," Guanshiyin Bodhisattva is mindful of you

The entire world is filled with natural disasters and calamities; it is covered in blackness and there is no light.

Why should we recite Guanshiyin Bodhisattva's name?

Sages cultivate in order to fathom the process of cause and effect. Ordinary people continue to create causes and undergo effects.

The great golden-winged peng bird's heart emits a radiant light.

Demons helped the Buddha attain the Way. If there were no demons, there would be no Buddha, either. Demons come to test you, to make you take another step forward.

Our recitation of Guanyin Bodhisattva's name should continue nonstop, like an ever flowing stream, until everything becomes one.

Wars result in the loss of life, property damage, the waste of our own energy; they also increase environmental pollution.

People are strange creatures in that they only have the flesh eye-the physical eye-and so they can't discern the relationship between previous causes and later effects in their lives.

Religious leaders, good and wise advisors, and greatly virtuous ones from all nations, I ask for your compassion today as we gather together to investigate the relationship between Buddhism and world peace.

Good advisors! The most terrible retribution in the world is that for killing.

Wherever I go, it's the same as being at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

Each of us should look within and ask ourselves: From the time I was born until now, what kinds of things have I done?

We shall now attempt to look into this big problem.

Good and Wise Advisors! People who study the Buddhadharma should not have thoughts of greed or contention. Some people are such that the more they study, the more they want to contend; the more they study, the greedier they become.

If we do not do a good job as human beings, we cannot become Buddhas.

Faith, vows, and practice are the three prerequisites of the Pure Land Dharma-door.

In the world today, there are too many who take life and too few people who save lives.

The four great Bodhisattvas have come to the Western nations to help the Buddha
spread the Dharma and teach people, and to make Buddhism flourish.

Why can't we demolish our ignorance, eliminate our afflictions, and reveal our wisdom? Because we crave food and sex.

If you can't find a good Way-place, then even if you want to cultivate, you won't be able to.

When you are cultivating, you should be able to "pick it up" and "put it down"; that is, be serious about what you're doing.

In his quest for perfect wisdom, the Buddha dedicated his life to vigorous cultivation.
How can we expect to achieve Buddhahood without any effort at all?

Sages cultivate in order end the process of cause and effect. Ordinary people continue to create causes and undergo effects.

Cultivation is not a one-day affair. Rather, we must cultivate in thought after thought, from morning to night, year after year and month after month.

If all people would free the creatures instead of eating them and all would practice vegetarianism, then all the worldly disasters would disappear and a crisis would be averted.

Stand outside a slaughterhouse at midnight. Listen to the pigs, sheep, and cows bleating and wailing, begging for their lives. Then, you'll know where war comes from.

Some people hate to do good deeds and only like to do wicked things, thinking they can gain advantages that way.

It's only when there are karmic disorders that such false illusions arise.

Love is a kind of emotional attachment that weighs us down. People suffer psychological trauma because of love.

If the universe is filled with auspicious proper energy, then the earth will not blow up.

Intelligent people correct their errors; ignorant people don't.

We have come here to practice Chan, not to fritter time away

It's because the Way and virtue are a person's foundation. Once we have the Way and virtue, we can stand on our own feet.

First I would like to wish all of you "Happy New Year," and I hope you are all healthy and in good spirits.

In Buddhism, the retribution you receive for each share of merit and each share of offense you create will not be off by a hairsbreadth.

Fate can be changed, and the power to do so is in our own hands.

Sweet dew and Dharma-water are used to dispel the poisonous energy in the world. For each bit that is dispelled, the world obtains a bit of peace.

From morning till night, we should bow to the Buddhas and recite the Buddhas’ names to eradicate our obstructions from offenses, and we should be busy for the sake of the Dharma.

No matter in front of whom we are repenting, we must say our confession clearly. Don’t be vague and vacillating.

If one is truly repentant, it can certainly be worked out.

We only need persist in our vigor, and we can certainly go home.

One cannot speak of true advantages. It is just as someone will know the warmth or coolness of a glass of water only after drinking from it.

It’s because the Way and virtue are a person’s foundation. Once we have the Way and virtue, we can stand on our own feet.

If you always wear a phony mask to cover yourself, you'll never get selected to be a Buddha.

The principle of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association has always been:

Talk less and meditate more: this is the fundamental requisite of cultivation.

Living beings are born without a beginning, and die without an end. Without beginning and without end, they transmigrate, revolving in birth and death.

The basic rule in Chan meditation is: "Let your eyes contemplate your nose; let your nose contemplate your mouth; let your mouth contemplate your mind."

Today I have some feelings and would like to tell you what has been on my mind. If you want to listen, fine.

Seeing Amitabha Buddha's great vow, I also wanted to turn the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas into a Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The In the world today, there are too many who take life and too few people who save lives.

Why do we recite "Namo Amitabha Buddha?" It is because Amitabha Buddha has a great affinity with living beings in the ten directions.

If we do not do a good job as human beings, we cannot become Buddhas. Therefore, we must lay the foundation. What is the foundation for being a human being?

Don't do any evil. Do only meritorious acts. Do only the things that benefit people. You should work only for the people's welfare, not for your own.

All elderly Good and Wise Advisors, all Good and Wise Advisors in the prime of life, and all young and promising Good and Wise Advisors:
