The Filiality Sutra says, "Cengzi attends to Confucius at his living quarters. Confucius says, 'Ancient emperors have the essential path to utmost virtue so that all under heaven is in peace, citizens work in harmony, those above and below have no complaints about each other, did you know that?' Confucius was relaxed and not doing much. Cengzi was next to him and serving him. Confucius said that ancient sages and past emperors have an essential way to utmost virtue, which is a most important principle and the best area to build virtue. Citizens work in harmony. By using this Tao, everyone gets along so that there are no fights, only peace. Those above and below have no complaints about each other. Whether it is those above to those below or vice versa, there are no complaints at all. 'Did you know that? Ceng Cang, did you know about this?' Cengzi stood up and said, 'Ceng is not so smart, how could I possibly know?'" Cengzi is one of Confucius' disciples. He stood up and said, "I, Ceng Cang, is not very intelligent, how could I know about such profound principles. I am not at that level yet. I do not have that kind of knowledge." Confucius then said, "We received our body, hair and skin from our parents; therefore we dare not damage them -- that makes for the start of filiality." Who gave us our hair and skin? Our father and mother. By not daring to damage them, that is the beginning of fililaity.

Our City of Ten Thousand Buddhas has established elementary, secondary schools and a university. By organizing an elementary school, we are trying our best to teach these students how to cherish their bodies. Why should we cherish our bodies? By cherishing our bodies, that is the start of filiality. The responsibility of an elementary school is for teachers to try to provide them as much principle about filiality as possible. That way they will be virgins and cherish their bodies and their families.

This is why our elementary school tries its best to teach our students about being filial and make their parents happy, complying with their parents. Hence, in our elementary school, we must study the Rules for Students. The rules for students are guidelines for being students and children, which they must know well. This is a Chinese version here, but we have an English translation too. This is the mission of our elementary school: teach students to be filial.

And the secondary schools? Students there must be loyal, being loyal to their country and cherish it. Why is education real national defense? Atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, death rays and weapons of this sort are all harmful. There is no peace when something hard crashes into something hard, when poison is used to fight poison. These are prepared for killing and harming human beings, a most cruel act. This is why we do not this. We teach people to be loyal to their country. We do not invade weaker countries because we are in the position of a superpower. We ought to cherish our own country as well as others'. Do not hurt people with this kind of weapon and arms. The fundamental principle to a real superpower is to teach all of humanity so that it understands.

But everyone dismisses this aspect. They only know about building aircrafts and bombers, and attacking others. If we attack other countries and try to rob the assets, clothes, and children of other countries, or sequestering other nationals, we are disloyal to our country. What does it mean to be disloyal? By invading others, we must lose many lives and assets in our country. Sacrificing lives and assets to acquire the assets of other countries, we incur irreparable losses. Even If we become owners to the assets of other countries, those countries cannot compensate for our losses. When those other countries become strong in the future, they will attack you. That is why when we attack other countries, we are being disloyal and unpatriotic to our country. Therefore we must cherish our country, our family and our lives.

Studying the Great Learning, we must cherish our life even more. Human beings ought to be humane and just. Benefiting others with humaneness and justness, we will not do others wrong. Handle matters and interact with people using "justness and humaneness."

These are the principles inherent in our type of education. I am taking this opportunity to tell you about it, otherwise everyone will think, "Oh, the Master is so dumb! He does not want money and he tells others not to want money too!" I am telling you that since I was born, whatever it is I did, I did it for free. I simply lived up to my responsibilities. No matter how significant it may be, I do not want money for helping others. I do not ask for any prize for saving people's lives. This is how stupid I am, so I am teaching you this stupid idea too.
